LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell junior catcher Jon Mayer (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) was named the first Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week of the 2015 season, the league office announced Monday. The 2014 First Team All-Patriot League selection was 5-for-10 with the runs scored, three doubles and five RBIs on the opening weekend of the campaign for the Bison.
Bucknell opened its season Saturday at Wake Forest and posted a 1-1 record, defeating the host Demon Deacons for their first win over an ACC opponent since 2008, and dropping a decision to Georgetown.
Mayer had a huge outing against Wake Forest as he was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, two doubles and four RBIs. It was his first career four-hit game and he reached base five times in six plate appearances in the victory.
A Charlottesville Regional All-Tournament Team selection last June, Mayer tied for the team lead in hits and doubles over the weekend. He has now hit in four straight games dating back to the end of last season.
This preseason, Mayer was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. He has 16 career extra-base hits and has driven in 34 runs while playing strong defense at the catcher position.
Mayer and the rest of the Bison will be back in action this coming weekend when they travel to UNC Greensboro for a three-game series. Singles contests will be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
