LEWISBURG, Pa. – Earlier this week the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) announced its FCS Defensive Awards Watch List and three Bison were recognized. Senior S Clayton Ewell (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Township), freshman DB Bryan Marine (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) and junior DL Ben Schumacher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) were the three Bucknell players cited for their strong performances so far in 2015.
Ewell is the only member of the Bison senior class to play in all 41 games over the last four years. He ranks third on the team with 53 tackles this season and is second only to Schumacher with 10 tackles for loss. Ewell is also among the team leaders with three sacks from his safety position.
Ewell has posted 171 tackles in his career, most among current Bison. He also tops the team with 29.5 tackles for loss in his career. Ewell also has 9.5 sacks, six interceptions and 13 pass breakups over the last four years.
Marine has made an immediate impact in Bucknell's defensive backfield. The rookie has seen action in all eight games with three starts at cornerback and leads the team with four interceptions, including a pair last Saturday at Lafayette. Marine is ranked 11th nationally with 0.5 interceptions per game.
Schumacher is in his first year as a regular starter on the Bison defensive line and has put up career highs in all categories with 31 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. A veteran of 16 games in his three-year career, Schumacher has been especially effective of late, averaging 7.0 tackles over the last three games. He has had at least one tackle for loss in seven of Bucknell's eight contests this season.
Bucknell (4-4, 1-2 PL) is coming off a 35-24 win at Lafayette last Saturday. The Bison will travel to nationally ranked Fordham on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest at Jack Coffey Field.
