Men's Swimming and Diving to Host Bucknell Invitational Friday-Sunday

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team will host seven other schools for the Bucknell Invitational this weekend at Kinney Natatorium. The three-day event runs from Friday to Sunday, with the prelims starting at 10 a.m. each day. Friday and Saturday's finals will begin at 6 p.m., while Sunday's finals are scheduled for 5 p.m.
Bucknell will be joined at the event by Binghamton, Buffalo, Connecticut, Fordham, Georgetown, La Salle and William & Mary this weekend. The Bison are 2-3 overall this season, including a 2-2 mark in the Patriot League. The seven visiting teams are a combined 14-10, including a 5-1 mark from William & Mary.
This weekend will mark the fifth consecutive season the Bucknell Invitational will be held at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison have placed in the top three in each of the first four, including a first-place finish out of seven teams the first time it was held in 2011.
The Bison finished second among nine teams last season, setting nine program top-10 marks in the process. Eight of those times were in individual races, and all four swimmers that combined to set them are back this season. Chris Devlin had an impressive performance last year, setting four program top-10 times, including a then-record in the 200 back. He later smashed his own record with a time of 1:45.04 at the Patriot League Championships. He also holds program records in the 100 back and the 400 IM.
Denver Freeman, Steve Grune and Sam Mackie combined to set the other four top-10 marks. Freeman had the 10th-best time in the 500 free and moved up to fourth later in the season, while Grune was seventh in the 50 free and eventually jumped to sixth. Mackie set the eighth-best time in the 200 breast and ninth-best time in the 100 breast. He now owns the fifth-best time in the 200 and eighth best in the 100.
Following the home invitational, Bucknell will have over a month off before its next competition. The Bison will return to the pool with away meets on back-to-back days as they travel to compete against Army West Point on Saturday, Jan. 9, and to Colgate on Sunday, Jan. 10.
