PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bucknell men's cross country team jumped two spots up from its regional ranking and finished 10th out of 25 teams at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Friday at Princeton's West Windsor Fields.
Junior Luke Giugliano was the top runner for Bucknell, taking 47th in a field of 174 competitors. The Academic All-Patriot League selection finished the 10k course in 31:59. The individual title was won by Villanova's Patrick Tiernan in 30:15, while Georgetown's Jonathan Green was the runner-up in 30:41.
Senior Andrew Kirna closed his Bucknell cross country career with a 64th-place finish, while sophomore Will Bordash was 72nd. They were followed in the Bison lineup by junior Ross Pirnie in 78th, senior Peter Murray in 83rd and senior John Kirna in 89th.
“It was nice to see Luke Giugliano and Will Bordash bounce back after struggling at leagues two weeks ago,” said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. “Ross Pirnie really stepped up and ran his best ever cross country race.”
No. 15 Georgetown took the team title with a score of 44. No. 23 Penn was the runner-up with 60 points, while No. 22 Villanova rounded out the top three with a score of 67.
Bucknell finished in the top 10 for the second straight season, posting a final score of 322, finishing 14 points better than 11th-place Lehigh. The Bison also defeated Duquesne, Rutgers, Pittsburgh and Temple in the top 15.
“Our guys ran a smart race and moved up nicely in the middle stages,” Donner said. “We do not have the luxury of having a frontrunner, but a nice pack finish helped us with a place two spots above our ranking.”
