LEWISBURG, Pa. – Each fall the Bucknell baseball program holds an intrasquad Fall World Series, where the roster is divided into two teams and they play a best-of-five series. This year, assistant coaches Matt Busch and Bobby Felmy were the skippers of the two squads and Team Felmy claimed the series title with a 5-3 victory in Thursday's game five.
Team Felmy needed to win the final two games to earn its crown. It was victorious in game four by an 8-4 score as Spencer Stokes, Luke Johnson and Evan Klugerman each recorded two hits. Team Felmy had a 5-3 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth inning in the seven-inning affair and ended up plating three runs in that frame thanks to RBI hits from Johnson and Klugerman
All five of Team Felmy's runs in game five were unearned as Team Busch committed four errors. Danny Rafferty was 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the contest, while Max Kra (1-0) allowed just six hits and two runs in 5.0 innings. Freshman Jeff Gottesman pitched the final two innings for the save. He was named the Most Valuable Pitcher in the Fall World Series as he picked up a win and a save.
“As always, the Fall World Series turned out to be very competitive,” commented Bison head coach Scott Heather. “We saw some things we liked and still have plenty to work on as we move our focus to our offseason lifting and individual work. It was good to see some guys step up and play well, which gives us a good idea of what our team will look like in the spring.”
Team Busch took an early lead in the series by winning game one 5-3 behind five shutout innings from senior Andrew Andreychik. He allowed just four hits and struck out 12 in 9.0 innings of work in two appearances during the Fall World Series.
Team Felmy evened the series at 1-1 when it exploded for 12 runs in game two. The squad scored at least one run in all but one inning and needed just seven hits on its way to the 12-2 victory.
Team Busch's pitching was the story in game three as Connor Van Hoose (5.0 IP), Hunter Robichaux (1.0 IP) and Austin Zimmerman (1.0 IP) combined for a one-hit shutout. The offense scored four runs in the second inning and one more in the third for the 5-0 victory.
Danny Rafferty, who was named MVP of the Fall World Series, led Team Felmy at the plate with a .375 batting average in the five games. Klugerman had a team-high eight RBIs.
Team Busch's offense was led by Sam Clark, who hit a robust .529 (9-for-17) with a team-best five RBIs. Aaron Fritz (.357), Mark Powell (.333) and Alex O'Neill (.308) were also over .300 for Team Busch.
Four of Team Felmy's eight pitchers posted ERAs of 2.08 or less. P.J. Strahm did not allow a run in 5.1 innings of relief over two appearances, while Keifer Rawlings pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Gottesman (1.23) and Kra (2.08) combined to allow just three runs and 15 hits in 16.0 innings.
Both teams posted a 5.03 ERA with 19 earned runs allowed in 34 innings of work.
Andreychik and Hunter Robichaux both had 0.00 ERAs for Team Busch, while Van Hoose's ERA was a solid 2.84 in 6.1 innings of work.
