WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It was a tough day for the Bison men's soccer team at Reeves Field, as red-hot American topped Bucknell 3-0 with three second-half goals on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles scored three times in a 12-minute span and posted their fifth consecutive shutout, while Bucknell's two-game winning streak came to an end.
It was a scoreless game into the 64th minute, when American capitalized on a mistake in the back. Sterling Kirk did well to take the ball away from Dale Ludwig, but Kirk's pass back to goalkeeper Clarke Fox was intercepted and slotted home by Joel Hart.
Just under 10 minutes later, Ludwig dribbled into heavy traffic in the penalty area and was cut off, but Nick Sifrin one-timed the loose ball off the hand of Fox and just over the line. Only 1:59 later it was 3-0, when Liam Robley belted a free kick through the wall and into the left side of the net.
American (10-4-2, 3-2-1 Patriot League), which beat 12th-ranked Virginia last week as part of this shutout streak, outshot Bucknell 21-4 and attempted all six corner kicks in the match.
Fox made seven saves, and Mike Lansing stopped four shots in the final 12:39 for the Bison. American keeper Dylan Hobart stopped two shots while extending his scoreless string to 563 minutes.
One bit of good news for the Bison is that all-star striker Jesse Klug returned to the lineup. Klug started and played 44 minutes after missing the previous six matches with an injury.
Now 5-6-4 overall and 1-3-2 in the Patriot League, the Bison will be back in action on Wednesday at home against Loyola at 7 p.m.
