LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team heads to Boston University on Saturday for its first Patriot League meet of the season. The meet, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Competition Pool, will be just the second time in history the Bison and Terriers will compete against each other in the regular season.
In the first ever meeting between the teams last season, Bucknell prevailed 159.5-139.5 behind nine individual wins. George Washington was also at the meet, but every event was won by either Bucknell or Boston University. Louis Behnen led the way with three wins, taking first in the 500 free, 1,000 free and 200 I.M. The Bison took the top four spots in the 500 free and all four swimmers return this season. Following Behn in the event were Denver Freeman, Sam Rutan and Brian Phillips. Steven Grune (50 free) and Tyler Wenzel (1-meter dive) added individual victories.
It has been two weeks since Bucknell's season-opening unscored meet against UMBC at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison swept the season's first Patriot League weekly awards. Behnen was named the Swimmer of the Week and Wenzel was selected the Diver of the Week. Behnen posted two individual wins and was a part of a first-place relay against the Retrievers, while Wenzel took first in both diving events.
If the Patriot League Preseason Poll is any indication, Saturday's meet should be closely contested. Boston University was picked third in a vote by the league's coaches and sports information directors, while Bucknell was predicted to finish fourth. Just seven points separated the two teams.
Bucknell went 5-2 in Patriot League meets last season and have gone 14-5 over the past three seasons. Boston University posted a 3-2 mark in its first year in the conference and opened this season with a 177-121 win over Lehigh.
Following the meet with the Terriers, the Bison's next competition will be on Saturday, Oct. 24, when they host Pittsburgh at Sojka Pavilion.
