EASTON, Pa. – The Bucknell field hockey team fell 3-1 at Lafayette on Saturday, losing in conference play for the first time since Oct. 26, 2013. The Bison are 5-7 overall on the season, but are still in good shape in the conference standings with a 2-1 record in the Patriot League.
The Bison finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal, and took six more penalty corners, but Lafayette made the most of its opportunities. The Leopards scored 1:50 into the game and added two more goals early in the second half on their way to improving to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Nicole Rupnik scored Bucknell's goal with the Bison trailing 3-0 in the 67th minute. It was the freshman's fifth goal on just 12 shots this season. Junior Amy Mucelli had an assist on the play, her first of the year.
Paige Macrae assisted on Lafayette's first two goals and scored the third. Kendall Weedling put the Leopards up 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. Neither team scored again until Rosie Shanks made the score 2-0 eight minutes into the second half.
Katelyn Arnold stopped six shots to pick up the win in goal. Bucknell nearly added a second goal with no time on the clock, but Hannah Millen made a defensive save on a shot by Kiersten Sydnor.
With Rupnik's goal, Bucknell has scored at least once in 16 straight games. The Bison have not been shutout since a 4-0 loss to nationally-ranked Syracuse on Oct. 26, 2014.
Bucknell will play at Temple on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Owls are 3-9 overall after an 8-0 loss to No. 2 Connecticut on Friday.
