LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's soccer team attempted 32 shots, including two that struck the crossbar, but none found the back of the net and the Bison settled for a 0-0 tie with Navy on Saturday at sunny Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison, who entered the day in a three-way tie for second place in the Patriot League, are now 2-1-2 in the league and 6-5-3 overall, while Navy moved to 7-4-4 overall and 1-0-4 in the conference.
Bucknell outshot Navy 32-13, including 10-0 in overtime and 22-6 after halftime, but its two closest chances resulted in solidly struck crossbars by Kendall Ham five minutes into the second half and Maddie Mulford in the second overtime period.
“I am excited with how we played today,” said head coach Kelly Kuss, whose team snapped a four-game losing streak to Navy. “We created a number of dangerous opportunities but just couldn't put one in the net. Our defensive effort was great for 110 minutes. Ultimately we are happy to get the point against a very good team, but it would have been great to have put one in.”
Ham found herself with space in the box and tried to pick out the top left corner. The shot bounced down off the crossbar and ended up back on Ham's foot, but a Navy defender dipped a toe in and deflected her follow-up attempt.
In the first overtime period, Cora Climo had plenty of room for a shot after a nice cross from Alexis Gannon, but her shot sailed wide of the right post.
Mulford nearly ended it with 3:45 left in the second overtime. Ham had a shot blocked, and Mulford stepped into the loose ball, only to have it rattle the crossbar.
Dayton Weatherby made seven saves for Navy, while Bucknell's Jessica Ratner made six stops en route to her sixth clean sheet of the season. That is the third-highest single-season total in team history. Katherine Sutton had eight shutouts in 2008, and Sandita McDermott seven in 2012.
Ratner's toughest save came in the 38th minute. From Navy's first corner kick of the day, Madeline Ostrowski took a shot from inside the 6-yard box that Ratner steered aside.
Gannon led all players in the game with seven shots, while Mulford and Ham had five each.
The Bison are back in action next Saturday at American at 1 p.m.
