LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Audrey Dotson and sophomore Claire DeBoer combined for 47 points and 18 rebounds while leading Bucknell to a come-from-behind 77-75 overtime win over Colgate in a Patriot League women's basketball game Saturday at Sojka Pavilion.
DeBoer received the ball in the post and beat her defender for a layup to tie the game at 69-69 with four seconds left in regulation. A half-court shot by Colgate's Mariah Jones hit off the rim, sending the game into overtime, where Bucknell finished the game off with an 8-6 edge, improving to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
DeBoer added four more points in overtime to finish with 20 points and eight rebounds. With the Bison trailing 74-73 with 2:07 to play, Dotson delivered a nice pass to the sophomore for an easy layup. After a defensive stop at the other end, Dotson made a layup of her own to put her team up 77-74.
Colgate cut Bucknell's lead to two (77-75) with a free throw with 48 seconds on the clock and had the ball with the chance to tie after Dotson was whistled for an offensive foul away from the ball on the Bison's ensuing possession. Following a steal by freshman Carly Richardson and a missed layup at the other end, the Raiders ran an inbounds play with one second left on the clock that resulted in an open layup, but the ball rolled off the front of the rim.
Dotson recorded the 14th double-double of her career with 27 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 10-of-14 from the field and added three steals, three assists and two blocks. Sophomore Megan McGurk tallied seven points and four assists. Juniors Sheaira Jones and Claire Maree O'Bryan scored six points apiece. Jones had an important bucket in overtime, giving the Bison a 71-69 lead.
Josie Stockill registered a double-double for Colgate with 18 points and 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Stockill also led the team defensively with four blocks. Jones and Paige Kriftcher scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Colgate, which dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League, took a 33-26 lead into the half. Bucknell was plagued by 10 turnovers and made only one of their 11 3-point attempts.
Bucknell took its first lead of the game, 53-52, on a layup by Dotson with 6:28 left in the second half. From there the Bison went on a 9-2 run, fueled by six more points from Dotson and a 3-pointer by O'Bryan, to take a 62-54 lead. The Raiders battled back and eventually regained the advantage before DeBoer scored the Bison's final four points in regulation to help tie the game.
The Bison won despite struggling in two areas they have excelled in all season. They entered the game ranked first in the conference in both foul shooting (75%) and rebounding margin (+10.0), but shot just 60 percent from the line against the Raiders and finished minus-9 (50-41) on the boards. They pulled down 19 offensive rebounds but gave up a season-high 24 offensive boards.
With junior Tyler Craig sidelined with an injury, Bucknell used a different starting lineup for the first time this season. Jones filled the starting role, while multiple freshmen played significant minutes. Richardson was on the floor for a season-high 26 minutes and finished with four points, four rebounds and the key steal in overtime.
“I thought she was someone who did make some hustle plays for us today,” Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell said of Richardson. “What she did isn't really going to show up in the box score, but she played 26 minutes as a freshman and a couple of minutes at the point guard spot and didn't commit a turnover. She's a calming presence for us. I don't think we win this game today if she's not on the floor.”
The Bison are now 2-0 in overtime games this season. They will make the short trip to Easton, Pennsylvania to take on Lafayette on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
