LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Sophomore guard John Azzinaro and freshman center Nana Foulland played starring roles in Bucknell's victories over Navy and Army last week, and both received honors on Monday. Foulland earned the Lids Team Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week award for the second time in the last three weeks, while Azzinaro was named the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week.
Azzinaro had a night to remember in Bucknell's 65-63 win over then-first-place Navy last Wednesday. The Bison trailed 61-55 with just over two minutes to play when Azzinaro hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions for his own personal 9-0 run. He tied the game with 1:17 remaining, then dove in to force a held ball at midcourt, giving Bucknell possession back. That set up his tiebreaking trey with 0:11 left, and after an exchange of free throws, the Bison had a dramatic victory.
Azzinaro finished that game with a career-high 19 points on near-perfect shooting. He was 6-for-7 from the field, 5-for-5 from the 3-point arc and 2-for-2 from the foul line. In Saturday's 81-75 home win over Army, Azzinaro scored three points, added three assists without a turnover, and drew two charging fouls.
Azzinaro is averaging 6.2 points per game on the season and is now shooting a solid 38.2 percent from 3-point range.
Foulland continued his ascent into one of the Patriot League's top low-post players. The first-year center tallied 12 points, seven assists and four blocked shots against Navy and then had 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the Army game.
Foulland is now averaging 8.8 points and a team-best 5.2 rebounds per game. He ranks second in the Patriot League in blocks (1.4) and sixth in field-goal percentage (.515). Foulland has scored in double figures in nine of the last 13 games, and he is logging 12.0 points and 6.2 rebounds in league play.
The pair of home wins over the service academies improved the Bison to 4-2 in Patriot League play, 9-10 overall. Bucknell will play at Loyola on Wednesday at 8 p.m. on the American Sports Network and PatriotLeague.TV.
