LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's defense recorded its first shutout since 2011 Saturday on the way to a 22-0 victory at Marist. One of the key cogs of that defensive effort was freshman DE Doug Whitlock (Monmouth Beach, N.J./Red Bank Catholic/Navy Prep), who was named the Corvias Patriot League Football Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Whitlock came off the bench to record three tackles and tied for the team high with two sacks as Bucknell (2-0) totaled five sacks in the team's fourth consecutive victory dating back to last year. Whitlock's first sack came in the second quarter, while his other one came on a third down play at the end of the third quarter that forced a Marist punt.
Through two games in his college career, Whitlock has recorded five tackles and two sacks. He is the first Bison to be named PL Rookie of the Week since Brian Regan in November 2012.
Whitlock was part of a dominant Bucknell defense that limited the Red Foxes to just 19 rushing yards. The Bison rank eighth nationally in rushing yard defense as opponents are averaging just 66.0 yards per game on the ground.
Bucknell has now claimed four Patriot League weekly awards in the first two weeks of 2014. C.J. Williams, Evan Byers and Derek Maurer were honored following a week one victory over VMI.
The Bison will be idle this weekend and will return to action Sept. 20 at Sacred Heart.
