WEST POINT, N.Y. -- A prototypically tight Bucknell-Army women's soccer match was decided on an 89th-minute penalty kick, as Mallory Herron scored from the spot with 1:32 left in regulation to give the host Black Knights a 2-1 win over the Bison in the Patriot League opener for both teams at Clinton Field. Madison Loos scored Bucknell's goal in the first half, but the Bison saw their four-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 5-4.
Eleven of the last 13 games between these two teams have been decided by either one goal or a draw, and this one was even on the stat sheet as well. Army outshot Bucknell by a narrow 17-15 margin, and both teams were credited with five saves.
Loos put the Bison on the board first in the 33rd minute with a crackling left-footed 25-yard shot placed over keeper Jordan Cassalia. Loos' second goal of the season came off an assist from Alexis Gannon, who chipped a ball into Loos from the right wing.
Bucknell's lead lasted until the 65th minute, when Katie Holder tallied her fourth goal of the season with a 20-yard shot after a feed from Madison McGinn.
Then in the final two minutes of the match, Holder delivered a cross into the box toward Herron, and a foul was called on a Bison defender. Herron finished the PK to give Army (4-5) the win.
Jessie Ashworth stopped five shots and Cassalia four, and the Black Knights also had a defensive save in the 28th minute.
"We were much better in the first half than in the second," said head coach Ben Landis. "We had some good chances, but we also settled for some shots and some early deliveries. At the end of the day we did not have enough to be surgical and precise with our final decisions. Our next league match is Lehigh at home. They won today (1-0 over American), so we need to focus on getting all three points at home to even it up with them."
But first the Bison will travel to State College on Tuesday to face No. 8 Penn State at 7 p.m. Lehigh visits Emmitt Field next Friday at 7 p.m. on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
