DeLAND, Fla. -- Sophomore Cora Climo recorded her first collegiate goal on a 67th-minute penalty kick, and that was all the Bucknell women's soccer team needed in a 1-0 road victory over Stetson on Friday in front of a spirited crowd at the Stetson Athletic Training Center. The victory was Bucknell's third in a row, and the Bison will now take a 4-3 record up I-95 to play defending Atlantic Sun champion Jacksonville on Sunday.
Bucknell's third straight win was much different than the previous two, when it piled up 30 and 32 shots, respectively, in wins over Robert Morris and Mount St. Mary's. This time the Bison were limited to five total shots against Stetson's 5-3-2 formation, but the result proved to be the same.
After 66 minutes of scoreless soccer, Bucknell midfielder Madison Loos played a ball over the top to Cassie Denger, who was immediately taken down by a defender. The penalty was awarded, and Climo buried the kick to become the eighth different Bison goal-scorer this season.
"Stetson gave us all that we could handle, and it was great that we showed that we can win in different ways against different styles," said head coach Ben Landis. "Jessie Ashworth and the entire defense held strong after we got the goal. It was a great atmosphere here tonight, and the ability to grind out a tough win on the road is something we are going to need in the Patriot League."
Ashworth finished with four saves, and Evelyn Nicinski and Courtney Nelson also blocked balls off the line. Bucknell had to defend six first-half corner kicks, including three in a row in one flurry. Landis rotated seven players through the back four and used 21 total players in the game.
Stetson (1-5-1) finished with an 11-5 shot advantage and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Bucknell-Jacksonville game is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday. Live statistics and a webcast will be available.
