LEWISBURG, Pa. – After a 2-0 week in which it matched its overall win total from last season and clinched a first round bye in the Patriot League tournament, the Bucknell women's basketball team swept the conference's weekly awards on Monday, becoming the first squad to accomplish that feat this season. Senior Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was named the Anaconda Sports Patriot League Player of the Week , while freshman Claire DeBoer (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) was selected as the Anaconda Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Romine earns the third Player of the Week award of her career and her first of the season, while DeBoer ties the Patriot League record for Rookie of the Week awards with her eighth nod. She joins Army's Kelsey Minato, who won eight times last season, and Bucknell's Lindsey Hollobaugh, who was selected eight times in the 2003-04 campaign, in possession of the conference record, with one week left to surpass the mark.
Romine led the Bison in scoring in both games last week, tallying 20+ points in each outing and continuing a 15-game double-digit scoring streak. She contributed a game-high 21 points on 61.5 percent shooting in Bucknell's 70-49 win over Loyola, hitting both of her three-point attempts and 3-of-4 from the line, and also chipped in five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Romine followed that up with her seventh career double-double and her sixth of the season on Saturday, scoring 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in a 62-50 victory over Boston University. Romine shot 50.0 percent from three and 90.0 percent from the free throw line against the Terriers, while also dishing out two assists.
Romine, who ranks fifth in the Patriot League with 15.2 points per game, became Bucknell's fifth all-time leading scorer with her 21-point effort on Wednesday and is just 15 points shy of reaching 1,500 for her career. She now has 23 career 20+ point games, including seven this season, and has hit 21-of-42 from three-point range since Jan. 25, giving her a 53.7 percent accuracy in that time span and ranking her second in the conference in three-point shooting percentage.
DeBoer, who has been named Rookie of the Week eight times in the last 12 weeks, scored 13 points in each of Bucknell's two wins, averaging 47.1 percent shooting. She hit 57.1 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the line against the Greyhounds, while also grabbing four rebounds, handing out two assists and making a steal in a dominant all-around effort. The forward took it one step further on Saturday, registering the sixth double-double of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds against the Terriers. Five of her boards came on the offensive glass, and she also led the Bison with three assists.
DeBoer has scored in double-digits in 11 of the 23 contests in which she has started, and continues to lead all Patriot League freshmen in both scoring and rebounding, ranking 22nd with 10.0 points per game and ninth in the conference with 6.8 boards per contest. She also ranks sixth in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and 19th in scoring (10.8 ppg) in Patriot League competition, once again leading all rookies.
Romine, DeBoer and the rest of the Bison will play their final road contest of the regular season on Wedneday, making the short trip to Bethlehem, Pa. to square off against Lehigh at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks sit in eighth place in the conference with a 5-10 record, most recently defeating Lafayette by a score of 73-59 on Saturday, but will square off against Army on Monday evening before taking on the Bison. Bucknell earned an 82-68 victory when the squads met at Sojka on Jan.29, led by a 28-point effort by Romine. The game, and all of the Bison's league contests, will be video streamed and available free of charge on the Patriot League Network.
