ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Patriot League Championships have a revised schedule this year with the addition of Loyola (Md.) and Boston U. The revised slate includes the meet now beginning on Wednesday evening with a pair of relays. The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team finished fourth in both the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay and set a school record in each in the process.
The 200 medley relay of Matt Hadley, Ben Seketa, Mike Nicholson and Steve Grune touched the wall in 1 minute, 30.20 seconds to place fourth. The foursome eclipsed the five-year-old school record by .30 seconds.
“The 200 medley relay exceeded expectations a little bit,” commented eighth-year Bucknell head coach Dan Schinnerer when asked about the school record. “It was nice to see them perform well. We thought we had a shot at the 800 free relay record and we put together four good legs.”
Erik Heinemann, Hadley, Louis Behnen and Daniel Wallace teamed up for a time of 6:39.04 in the 800 free relay. That time shaved .75 seconds off the school record that was set at the 2012 Patriot League Championships in Annapolis.
“Matt Hadley showed his versatility for us tonight,” said Schinnerer about the senior who was part of both relays on Wednesday. “He is a strong sprinter for us and could probably swim in all five relays this week if the rules permitted it.”
Bucknell sits fourth in the team standings with 60 points. Host Navy is first with 80 points after sweeping both relays Wednesday.
The Patriot League Championships will continue Thursday with a full day of competition at Lejeune Hall. The 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and men's one-meter diving are the individual events that will take place. Additionally the 200 free relay will be held. Prelims will take place at 10:30 a.m., while the finals are slated for 6 p.m.
