NEWARK, Del. – Joy Caracciolo grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback with three seconds left on the clock to give Delaware a 58-56 win over visiting Bucknell in non-conference women's basketball action Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Caracciolo's last-second shot overshadowed career nights offensively from Bucknell freshman Jacquie Klotz and junior Sheaira Jones. Playing in just her third career game Klotz scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in 20 minutes of floor time, while Jones scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
A layup by Jones gave Bucknell a 56-50 lead with 3:12 showing on the clock, but the Bison went scoreless for the remainder of the game. Delaware went on an 8-0 in the final 2:50 of play to pick up the win, improving to 4-3 on the year. The Bison fell to 4-3 overall and 2-3 on the road this season.
Delaware had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by Courtni Green with 16 points. Erika Brown and Hannah Jardine each had 15 points, while Caracciolo finished with 10.
Junior Tyler Craig was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line and scored 10 points to join Klotz and Jones in double figures. As a team, the Bison were 13-of-15 from the foul line, led by a 6-for-6 night from junior Claire Maree O'Bryan, who had eight points.
Klotz, Jones and O'Bryan scored eight points apiece in the first half to give the Bison a 30-27 lead at the break. Klotz, scored her eight in just five minutes of play before going to the bench after her second foul. She made her first three field goals – two 3-pointers and a deep jumper – in a span of 2:11. The second 3-pointer tied the game at 13-13.
Jones, whose season-high prior to Saturday was seven points, also had a stretch of carrying Bucknell's offensive output in the first half. She scored seven straight points for her team, including a 3-pointer to give the Bison their first lead of the game, 26-25 with 2:13 showing on the clock.
Bucknell had 36 boards to Delaware's 35 to win the rebounding battle for the third consecutive game. Sophomore Claire DeBoer pulled down 10 rebounds for her fifth straight game in double digits. Thanks to Klotz and Jones, the Bison also finished with a significant advantage in bench points, 34-10.
The Bison will return home for a game against UMBC on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
