Burgess Leads Heptathlon After First Day of Bison Opener

LEWISBURG – Bucknell senior Ben Burgess won three of four events Friday night to take a commanding lead in the heptathlon after the first day of competition at the season-opening Bison Opener at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
Burgess accumulated 2,794 points with three events left. Bison sophomore Christopher D'Aliso is second in the eight-athlete field with 2,463 points, while Shippensburg's Matthew Merrit is third with 2,416.
Burgess had the night's top marks in the 60-meter dash (7.28), long jump (6.67m) and shot put (12.09m). He was second in the high jump, clearing 1.84 meters on his first attempt. D'Aliso was the runner-up in both the long jump and the shot put.
Action picks back up with the men's heptathlon at 8 a.m. The field events will start at 9:30 a.m., and the running events will get underway at 11 a.m.
