LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Julianna Foss, sophomore Diana Hanson and junior Emma Levendoski each broke a school record and a total of nine new program top-10 marks were set by the Bison women's swimming and diving team Saturday on the second day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison remain in first place by more than 400 points in the nine-team field.
Perhaps the most impressive new school record belongs to Foss, who broke the program's longest-standing record. Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Margaret Grunow had held the 100 fly record (56.02) since 1993 and Foss smashed the mark on Saturday. The rookie beat Grunow's mark with a 55.91 race in the morning prelims and then lowered her time to 55.25 to win in the finals, shaving .77 seconds off the record entering the day.
Hanson entered the day ranked sixth in program history in the 100 breast and now resides at the top of that list. Her finals time of 1:03.64 helped her to a second-place finish at took .17 seconds off Macey Keath's record that had stood since 2009. Hanson was one of four Bison to finish in the top nine of the 100 breast and one of three to etch their names on the school's record list in the event as freshman Leah Bloodgood recorded the No. 8 time (1:05.40) in program history in the prelims and Gina Gautieri posted the No. 10 time (1:05.85).
Levendoski has owned the school record in both backstrokes for most of her career at Bucknell and on Saturday she lowered the 100 back record even more. Her time of 53.53 seconds helped her win the event and take .62 seconds off her previous best mark (54.15). She touched the wall 2.31 seconds ahead of the runner-up in the race.
There were five individual swimming events contested on Saturday and Bucknell's top finisher was first in three of them and second in the other two. Amber McDonnell joined Foss and Levendoski in the winner's circle by claiming the 400 IM. Hanson was second in that event with the No. 6 time in program history, giving her a pair of runner-up finishes on the day.
Lauren Perry was Bucknell's top finisher in the 200 free, touching the wall second.
The Bison displayed their depth very well on Saturday as they had five of the top six finishers in the 400 IM, three of the top nine in the 200 free, four of the top nine in the 100 breast and four of the top nine in the 100 back.
Foss followed her school record in the 100 fly with the No. 5 time in school annals in the 100 back. She was in the “B” final and her finals time of 56.62 was good enough for her to finish in first place in her race and was faster than all but two swimmers in the “A” final. Maddie Marcheskie also put her name on the 100 back ledger with the No. 7 time in program history on her way to a third-place finish.
Freshman Dani Potis, who won the 500 free on Friday, finished fifth in the 400 IM on Saturday, but her time prelims time placed her eighth in program history.
Levendoski, Hanson, Foss and Marcheskie also teamed up for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay and posted the fifth-best time in school history (1:43.69).
The three-day Bucknell Invitational will wrap up Sunday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
