LEWISBURG, Pa. – Dani Potis won the 500 free and Diana Hanson captured first in the 200 IM to highlight the first day of the three-day Bucknell Invitational Friday for the Bison women's swimming and diving team. Bucknell used its depth in those two events and the 50 free to take the early lead in the team standings by a commanding 177 points over second-place Fordham.
The Bison, who have won their own invitational three years running, have piled up 452 points. The Rams are in a tight battle for second place with 275 points, two ahead of Georgetown.
While Potis and Hanson collected gold medals, depth was the key for Bucknell, which had five of the top 12 finishers in the 500 free and six of the top 12 in the 200 IM. Just one Bison was in the top 10 in the 50 free, but there were six that finished from 10th to 22nd in the field.
Potis excelled in the 500 free, touching the wall in 4:53.69, the No. 4 time in program history. Seventh-place finisher Paige Daniel also posted a top-10 time as her prelims mark of 5:00.34 placed her ninth in school annals. Lauren Perry (6th) also made the “A” final, while Stephanie Koziol (10th) and Alanna Nawrocki (12th) were “B” finalists.
Hanson captured the 200 IM in 2:02.92, trimming .17 off her previous personal best. She continues to rank second in program history in that event. Hanson finished 1.76 seconds ahead of runner-up teammate Amber McDonnell. Ashley Henderson (4th) gave the Bison three of the top four finishers in the race. Rachel McGoff (7th) was also an “A” finalist, while Caroline Orem (10th) and Meg Lattimer (12th) rounded out the list of Bucknell scorers in the 200 IM.
Maddie Marcheskie was the top Bison finisher in the 50 free, touching the wall 10th.
Lauren Perry (500 free, 50 free) and McGoff (200 IM, 50 free) were the only Bucknell swimmers to score in two individual events Friday.
The Bison 400 medley relay of Emma Levendoski, Henderson, Julianna Foss and Caroline Edelman placed second with a time of 3:47.88. That placed them sixth in program history.
Tara Boyle was the top Bucknell diver on Friday, placing sixth off the one-meter board, while the 200 free relay was ninth to open the evening finals session.
The Bucknell Invitational will continue Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m. at Kinney Natatorium.
