LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Jamie Luchini's free kick from 35 yards out skipped through heavy traffic in the box and went untouched into the right side of the net with just 1:34 left in regulation, giving Lehigh a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Bucknell on Saturday night at chilly Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Jesse Klug scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season just 3:29 into the match and the Bison protected that 1-0 lead well into the second half, but Doyle Tuvesson tied it in the 73rd minute and Luchini won it in the 89th for the Mountain Hawks. Bucknell fell to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League, while Lehigh improved to 6-3, 2-0.
After playing a spirited second half in a 2-0 loss to No. 4 Penn State on Wednesday, the Bison came out flying and logged an early goal. Patrick Figgie cut inside from the right wing and fed Klug, who spun into the box and fired a low shot just inside the left post.
Not long after falling behind, Lehigh upped its pressure and it was an evenly played match from there. The final shot tally was 13-13 and both teams attempted five corner kicks.
In the second half Klug launched a rocket from the top of the 18 but it was right at Lehigh keeper Ciaran Nugent. With about eight minutes to play Connor Willings got behind the defense momentarily, but defender Brian Suchoski slid over to block the shot at the last second.
Mike Lansing made a good save on a rising shot by Luchini, but Lehigh tied it with 17:57 to play. Tuvesson collected a long ball down the left flank and turned inside near the top of the box. Defender Zack Rockmore appeared to have good position, but he was run into by another Lehigh player making a run behind Tuvesson. With his man now on the ground, Tuvesson broke to his right and fired a shot past Lansing just inside the left post.
The Mountain Hawks then took advantage of a Bucknell foul to net the game-winner in the waning minutes.
"All credit to Lehigh, they didn't quit after falling behind 1-0," said head coach Brendan Nash. "We did not manage the game well. In the second half we did not play with maturity or composure, and we need to learn from that."
Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday night at Loyola at 7 p.m.
