ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Jamie Dubyoski's goal in the 65th minute was the only tally of the game, as Navy edged Bucknell 1-0 in Patriot League men's soccer action Saturday night at Glenn Warner Soccer Complex. The Bison fell to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League, while the defending champion Midshipmen improved to 8-4-2, 4-1-0, with its fourth straight shutout win.
Bucknell had the possession advantage in the first half and took nine shots to Navy's five. Chris Thorsheim had a good look in the 25th minute, but his sharp-angle shot barely missed the far post. Five minutes later, Jesse Klug weaved past several Midshipmen along the right side, cut into the box and fired a shot that Navy keeper Jackson Morgan had to block over the bar.
The first save of the night for Mike Lansing was a diving stop on Derek Vogel's drive from the top of the 18 five minutes into the second half. After Klug had another decent look turned aside by Morgan, Vogel sent a solid header wide in the 63rd minute.
Just over a minute later, Navy put a goal on the board. Thomas Shiiba found lots of space right up the middle before sending a through ball into Dubyoski in the left side of the area. With a defender with him stride-for-stride, the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year managed to slip his only shot of the night past Lansing inside the far post for his sixth goal of the year.
Sam Bascom nearly made it 2-0 in the 75th minute, but his left-footed strike hit the right post and was cleared away. The Bison put a dangerous ball into the box with about 30 seconds remaining, but Morgan blocked a contested shot by Jonathan Grad, and Navy was able to run out the clock.
"I am disappointed in the result, but not in the effort," said head coach Brendan Nash. "The guys followed the game plan very well for most of the night, but Navy capitalized on one lapse, which was the difference in the game."
Bucknell finished with a 14-11 shot advantage. Klug took a game-high six of those shots and put four on goal. Morgan logged seven saves for Navy, while Lansing stopped two shots for the Bison.
Things do not get any easier for the Bison, who travel to No. 2 Syracuse on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
