HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Bucknell was locked up in an even bout with Patriot League-leading Colgate for 78 minutes, but a long service got through to Sarah Coy for a breakaway goal that sent the Raiders on the way to a 2-0 verdict over the Bison on Saturday afternoon. Coy added another goal on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute for Colgate (11-1-2, 5-0-1 PL), which is now unbeaten in its last 13 games, while the Bison fell to 7-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the Patriot League.
Bucknell remains in the sixth and final Patriot League Tournament position, but Lafayette crept within a point of the Bison after beating American on Saturday. Bucknell and Lafayette will meet on Wednesday at Emmitt Field.
Bucknell and Colgate attempted five shots apiece in a scoreless first half, and the Bison had some quality pressure in the second half. Meghan Holtz hit a goalpost with a shot from distance in the 53rd minute, and about two minutes later Cora Climo had a clean header inside the box that was saved by Brenna Mason.
The Bison earned consecutive corner kicks in the 70th minute, and then Jessie Ashworth made a save on Coy on a Colgate counter.
It was still scoreless into the 79th minute when Catherine Williams' long service from near midfield snuck between two backs, sending Coy in alone. The Colgate striker finished the breakaway for her seventh goal of the year. Just over four minutes later, Coy logged No. 8 on a penalty kick after a Bison foul in the box near the end line to the left of the goal. Ashworth got a hand on the PK with a dive to her left, but the ball deflected in.
Bucknell still had a couple of good looks after the penalty. A cross in from the left fell to Holtz 12 yards out, but a Colgate defender stuck out a leg to block the shot at the last instant. Brigit Falcón later hit a rising shot over the bar.
Colgate finished with a 13-12 shot advantage. Ashworth tallied four saves and Mason five.
"I was very proud of the effort," said head coach Ben Landis. "It was a good back-and-forth game and we had our chances. We were playing a very high line, and it was working well until they got one behind us late."
Coy led all players with nine shots for the Raiders, who are the No. 1 team in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll and it is fourth team listed among "others receiving votes" in the national poll. Climo and Holtz took three shots each for the Bison.
Wednesday's game against Lafayette will be a 7 p.m. start and will air live on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
