BALTIMORE, Md. -- Goals from Alexis Gannon 2:07 before halftime and Kendall Ham 52 seconds after the intermission sent the Bucknell women's soccer team on the way to a 2-1 Patriot League victory at Loyola Maryland on Wednesday night at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The Bison moved to 6-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Patriot League play, and they are now in a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings.
There were only 13 total shots attempted in the match -- seven by Bucknell -- but three of them found the net. Gannon's second goal of the year was a beauty just before the break. It started with a good punt from keeper Jessie Ashworth. Madison Loos headed the ball forward and then Maddie Mulford propelled it forward to a streaking Gannon who was alone with one defender to beat. Gannon nudged the ball past her defender and then ripped a left-footed shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Just after the resumption of play, the Bison sent a ball over the top of the defense, Cassie Denger tracked it down on the end line and made a perfect cross to Ham for a tap-in goal. It was Ham's team-leading fifth goal of the season, and it would prove to be the game-winner when the Greyhounds (4-6-1, 0-2-1) pulled one back in the 66th minute.
Charlotte Miller crushed a shot off the goalpost, and Jess Soldiviero scored on the rebound to make it a 2-1 game.
Ashworth was called upon for her first save of the night on a Soldivieiro shot in the 88th minute, and the Bison had to fend off a corner kick with just over a minute to play.
Bucknell was joined in the win column by Boston University (3-0 over Holy Cross), Navy (4-1 over American), Colgate (5-0 over Army) and Lehigh (2-1 over Lafayette) on Wednesday, with the five victorious teams combining for 16 goals.
Colgate is the only team to earn the full nine points through three rounds of league action. Boston University and Lehigh both have seven, Navy has six, and Bucknell, Army and Holy Cross all have four.
The Bison host American on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
