Nicholson, Hetherington Win PL Weekly Swimming & Diving Awards

LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the fourth time this season Bucknell swimming and diving team members Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and Katie Hetherington (Houston, Texas/Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart) have earned Patriot League Weekly Awards on the same day. Nicholson on Tuesday earned his fifth PL Male Swimmer of the Week honor, while Hetherington was named PL Female Diver of the Week for the fourth time in 2013-14.
Nicholson, the Patriot League record holder with 16 career weekly honors, posted four individual first-place finishes in weekend dual meets against Army and Binghamton. He captured the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM against Army and the 200 IM opposite Binghamton. The senior also finished third in the 100 free against the Bearcats and was part of two medley relays that finished first (vs. Binghamton) and second (vs. Army).
A three-time All-Patriot League selection, Nicholson now has 26 individual victories this season. His three wins against Army came by a combined 8.00 seconds, including a 4.69-second victory in the 200 fly. Nicholson's time of 47.94 in the 100 free was a career best and moved him from eighth to sixth on the program's all-time list.
Hetherington helped the Bucknell women to a 15-point point victory at Army with a sweep of the diving events. It marked her second sweep this season as she posted her third-highest score (245.62) of the year off the one-meter board. Hetherington's 265.12 off the three-meter was nearly 32 points better than runner-up teammate Tara Boyle.
Hetherington, a junior, has now won 12 career Patriot League Female Diver of the Week awards.
Members of Bucknell's swimming and diving teams have now combined for 14 weekly honors this season. In addition to the nine weekly awards won by Nicholson and Hetherington, Emma Levendoski is a three-time PL Female Swimmer of the Week and was named Bison Athlete of the Week in late November. Additionally, Kaitlyn Utkewicz earned her first career PL Female Swimmer of the Week recognition last Monday.
The Bison are now in preparations for their final dual of the 2013-14 season Jan. 25 at Lehigh. Start time is 1 p.m.
