LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Mayowa Alli (Lanham, Md./Bishop McNamara) earned his sixth career Brine Patriot League Player of the Week honor on Monday, this one a Defensive Player of the Week nod after he quarterbacked a strong team defensive effort in three games last week.
Bucknell played three games in a span of just five days, and Alli played all 270 minutes at center back while helping the squad win two of the three contests. After falling 1-0 to Saint Francis (Pa.) last Wednesday, the Bison bounced back with a pair of one-goal wins over the weekend, 1-0 over Buffalo on Friday night and 2-1 over a high-scoring La Salle team on Sunday.
Alli and the Bison did a stellar job keeping their opponents away from the goal in all three games. In those three matches, the opposition attempted only 17 total shots, only six of which were on frame.
Bucknell outshot Saint Francis 21-3, but the Red Flash's only on-target shot of the night skipped through traffic and found the net. In the shutout of Buffalo, the Bison held a 16-8 shot advantage, with only three of the Bulls' shots on goal. Against a La Salle team that had scored five times in its first two games of the year, the Bison limited the Explorers to six total shots and just three on frame.
This is Alli's third career Defensive Player of the Week honor, and he also has three Offensive Player of the Week awards. A dangerous two-way threat, Alli attempted seven shots in the three games last week.
Alli was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2010, a First Team All-Patriot League defender in 2011 and a Preseason All-Patriot League pick this season.
Now 2-2 on the season, Bucknell heads out on the road for the first time in 2013, facing Albany on Friday at 8 p.m. at Union College before visiting Siena on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
