LEWISBURG, Pa. – Two teams that traditionally do not appear on the Bucknell field hockey schedule are opponents for the Bison this coming weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Bucknell has played just four games ever against Missouri State and Ohio State, teams it will play Saturday and Sunday as part of the Buckeye Classic.
Both Bison games this weekend will begin at noon at Buckeye Varsity Field with Saturday's matchup against Missouri State marking the third meeting in series history, and the first since 1999. Bucknell holds a 2-0 edge in the series. The Bison and Buckeyes have only met twice previously. Ohio State claimed a 3-1 victory last September at Graham Field and a 6-1 decision in 2007 in Columbus.
Bucknell is in the midst of playing its first five games away from Lewisburg. It opened the 2013 campaign last weekend with losses to No. 13 Iowa and at Lock Haven. The Bison did post a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners in the two contests.
Senior Leigh Hillman posted the first goal of the season for Bucknell against Iowa, while classmate Erica Perrine has seven saves on the season, boosting her career total to 206.
Ohio State enters the weekend with a 1-1 record. The Buckeyes lost to Temple, 4-1, and defeated No. 20 New Hampshire, 3-2, in an overtime shootout last weekend in Philadelphia.
Missouri State also split two games on the first weekend of the season. The Bears traveled to California and lost to UC Davis by a 4-0 score, but then downed Pacific by a 3-2 margin.
The Buckeye Classic begins Friday with Ohio State hosting Missouri State at 3 p.m.
Bucknell will have one more game away from home (Sept. 13 at Drexel) before opening its home schedule next Sunday, Sept. 15, against Penn. That contest will commence a four-game homestand.
