LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomores Jesse Klug (Sammamish, Wash./Overlake School) and Mike Lansing (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), two of the stars of Bucknell's 2-0 road win over Seton Hall on Saturday, earned Brine Patriot League Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors on Monday. Lansing was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, while Klug garnered his second straight Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week citation in addition to being named Bison Athlete of the Week.
Klug scored both goals in the 2-0 win over the Pirates, one coming early and the other late. Just 5:40 into the match Connor Willings sent a long service into the box, and Klug beat two defenders and the charging goalkeeper to the ball and chested it into the open net for a 1-0 lead.
Seton Hall threatened to tie it on a number of occasions before Klug provided a much-needed insurance goal with just 7:04 left in regulation. A great pass from Chris Thorsheim led to a shot off the post by Austin Lenart, and Klug was there to put back the rebound.
Bucknell's winning streak is now at five games after the Seton Hall verdict, and Klug has the game-winning goal in each of the last four contests. Saturday's brace was his first career multi-goal performance, and he has five goals in those four games. The last Bucknell player to score a goal in four straight games was Scott Gilroy in 1996.
Klug's five goals lead the team and rank second in the Patriot League behind Loyola's Larry Ndjock, who has seven. He also ranks 14th nationally in goals scored.
While Klug has been finishing at the offensive end, Lansing has been keeping balls out of the Bucknell net. With Saturday's sensational 11-save performance at Seton Hall, Lansing has extended his personal shutout streak to four straight games and his scoreless minutes streak to 393:05.
Lansing is the first Bison goalkeeper to post four consecutive shutouts since Kevin Meyer opened the 1983 season with a school-record six straight clean sheets. Lansing lowered his goals-against average to 0.66 and upped his save percentage to .867. He ranks second in the Patriot League and 15th nationally in save percentage.
Bucknell has outscored opponents 8-1 during this five-game winning streak and now stand at 5-2 on the season. The Bison open up Patriot League play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Army at Emmitt Field. The Black Knights are 5-1-1 in 2013 and had not allowed a goal all year until Sunday's 3-2 loss to Houston Baptist.
