CORAOPOLIS, Pa. -- Freshman forward Sarah Bresette notched her first collegiate goal, but Robert Morris tallied three times at the other end to take a 3-1 decision over Bucknell on Sunday in a non-league women's soccer game at the North Athletic Complex. The Bison fall to 2-2 on the season heading into a two-game homestand, while the Colonials remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Trailing 2-0 into the final minute of the first half, the Bison got on the board when Cassie Denger's cross from the right wing was redirected in by Bresette at the near post.
Bucknell went to an extra attacking player in the second half in an effort to net the equalizer, and the Bison almost got it seven minutes after the resumption of play. Freshman Alexis Gannon had a shot cleared off the line by a defender, then Chelsey Garkowski was robbed on a point-blank shot by goalkeeper Chelsea de Jager. Courtney Nelson put the rebound off the crossbar, and a fourth attempt from Liz Dwornik was headed wide.
Six minutes later the ball was in the back of Bucknell's own net, as Madison Kozlowski countered with a high shot from distance that eluded the reach of keeper Jessie Ashworth.
Kozlowski also scored the Colonials' first goal just 6:34 into the match. It came on a corner kick sequence, as Alexa Sarsfield headed the serve back to Kozlowski in the middle of the penalty area for a one-touch goal.
In the 37th minute, Johanna Kadam came up with a sliding finish on Brittany Rowe's cross to make it 2-0.Bucknell outshot Robert Morris 22-14, including 14-8 in the second half. The Bison also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Ashworth made nine saves for the second straight game for the Bison. Robert Morris used two keepers. Becky Schoenecker stopped two shots in the first half, and then de Jager made four big saves in the second period.
"It was a frustrating day," said coach Ben Landis, who was missing both of his starting center backs for the second straight game. "I thought we had some good chances and were all over them for awhile in the second half. Their second-half keeper played well and kept it 2-1, and then they countered with a big third goal. But the bottom line is that we have to defend better. Hopefully we will get healthier this week and get refocused defensively with two good teams coming up in Saint Francis and Penn State."
The Bison host Saint Francis (Pa.) next Saturday at noon, and then Penn State comes to Emmitt Field on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
