LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore Jessie Ashworth (Richmond, Va./Godwin) made quite a first impression as a starting goalkeeper, posting back-to-back shutouts in two Bison victories over the weekend, and on Monday she was rewarded with the first Brine Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week award.
Ashworth appeared in two games as a freshman in 2012 while backing up all-conference keeper Sandita McDermott. She earned the starting nod with a strong 2013 preseason, and then she played all 180 minutes in goal in Bucknell's 3-0 home win over Rider and 2-0 away defeat of Mount St. Mary's.
Ashworth made two saves in the Rider match, none better than a spectacular diving stop on a penalty kick late in the game. She then stopped four shots against Mount St. Mary's to help the Bison improve to 2-0 on the season.
This is the first time in program history that the Bison have opened a season with two straight shutouts, and it is the team's first 2-0 start since 2003.
Bucknell plays twice more on the road this coming weekend, visiting Pittsburgh on Friday at 5 p.m. and Robert Morris on Sunday at 1 p.m.
