LEWISBURG, Pa. - The College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) recently announced its watch list for the 2013 CFPA Football Championship Subdivision Linebacker Award and Bucknell's Evan Byers (Roaring Brook, Pa./Wyoming Seminary/Trinity-Pawling (N.Y.)) earned a spot on the list, which includes 35 returning performers vying for the top individual defensive end and defensive tackle awards in FCS. Byers is the second Bison to earn preseason recognition from the CFPA, following Sean Sellers' selection last week to the watch list for defensive lineman.
A Second Team All-Patriot League selection as a sophomore in 2012, Byers led Bucknell with 100 tackles a year ago. He was the first Bison with 100 tackles since 2009 and just the fifth since 2000 to reach that plateau. Byers ranked fifth in the Patriot League and was tied for 48th nationally in stops and had a team-high four double-figure tackle outings.
The winner of the Bison Gridiron Club Award as the team's MVP last year, Byers registered at least six tackles in every game and was second on the squad with 13.5 tackles for loss, third in sacks (5.5) and second in interceptions (3).
A veteran of 22 career games, Byers has piled up 134 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and four interceptions in his first two years at Bucknell.
All CFPA honorees are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions.
The full list of 2013 CFPA recipients will be announced Jan. 8, 2014.
