LEWISBURG, Pa. - Just three months remain until the official start of Bucknell field hockey's competitive schedule begins. The Bison open their season on Aug. 30 against Iowa, one of six teams that ended last season ranked in the nation's top 25. The newly expanded Patriot League schedule gets underway on Sept. 21 with the conference tournament, which has included Bucknell each of the last five years, set for Nov. 8-9 at the highest seed.
Bucknell's first opponent of the year will be Iowa, which finished the 2012 campaign ranked 14th in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. The Bison and Hawkeyes will square off in Easton, Pa., in its only August contest. It will be the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and Iowa.
Five other teams ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's final poll also appear on the Bison's schedule this fall. Among them are No. 15 Drexel (Sept. 13), No. 13 Lafayette (Oct. 5), No. 18 Boston University (Oct. 19) and No. 20 New Hampshire (Oct. 20). The highest ranked team in the group is also the only one that will play at Bucknell's Graham Field. Penn State, which was seeded fourth in the NCAA Championship and finished the year at No. 3 nationally, will head to Lewisburg on Oct. 13.
The Bison will kick off their home schedule on Sept. 15 when they host Penn at 1 p.m. That marks the start of four-game homestand that also includes the team's Patriot League opener against Lehigh.
The Patriot League schedule welcomes the addition of Boston University. The Terriers will officially join the conference on July 1 and will host the Bison on Oct. 19.
Bucknell finished the 2012 season at 9-10 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League to earn the third seed in the conference tournament. The Bison fell to American in the semifinals. They return nine starters from a year ago, including four of their five All-League performers in Kelsey Mucelli, Rachel Misko, Erica Perrine and Vickie Resh.
