LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's rowing's varsity eight was named the Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday after defeating Penn in a head-to-head race for the first time in program history on Saturday. The varsity eight also defeated Drexel on Saturday and finished in second place at the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday.
This marks the seventh time the varsity eight has earned Bison Athlete of the Week honors. The boat has won the award after six of its seven consecutive Patriot League Championships. Overall, this marks the 10th time a women's rowing boat has been named Bison Athlete of the Week since 2006.
The varsity eight opened the weekend with a victory over Drexel on the Schuylkill River. The Bison crossed the finish line 6.64 seconds ahead of the Dragons. Later in the day, also on the Schuylkill, Bucknell made program history when the varsity eight finished .7 seconds ahead of Penn.
Less than 24 hours after racing Penn, the varsity eight was on the water in Fairfax, Va., on the Occoquan Reservoir. The Bison took second in their heat to Temple and then placed second in the finals to fellow Patriot League member Navy.
The varsity eight was one of a number of Bucknell boats in action over the weekend. Seven Bison crews rowed at Sunday's Occoquan Sprints, while four raced Drexel and Penn.
Bucknell will return to action this coming weekend when it competes at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., April 13-14. The Bison varsity eight finished second at last year's Knecht Cup.
