PRINCETON, N.J. –Playing its eighth nationally ranked opponent in the last month, the Bucknell women's water polo team completed its regular season Sunday with a 14-5 loss at No. 12 Princeton in DeNunzio Pool. The game was tied 5-5 at halftime as the Bison finished the regular season at 5-15 overall and 2-3 in CWPA Southern Division play.
With a win over the Tigers, Bucknell would have finished the regular season in a three-way second-place tie in the conference standings with Brown and Harvard. Instead, the Bison finished in a fourth-place tie with George Washington and will be the fifth seed at next week's Southern Championships.
Bucknell jumped out to the early advantage on Princeton on Sunday as it led 4-1 at the end of the first period of play. The Bison, who defeated Merychurst by eight goals on Saturday, were looking to win two games in a row for the first time since mid-February, however, the Tigers outscored Bucknell 13-1 over the game's final 24 minutes.
Julianne Valdes led the Bison with two goals and one assist, while Barbara Peterson, Krystle Morgan and Eleanor Marrs added one score apiece. Peterson and Marrs also dished out assists.
Bucknell's offense had plenty of chances to score as the Bison drew 11 ejections in the game, including a career high-tying six by Morgan and a season high-tying four by Hannah Sunday.
Rena Heim recorded 10 saves in goal for Bucknell, boosting her season total to 189 and her career figure to 591.
Bucknell will open the Southern Championships against top-seeded Princeton, which finished 5-0 in league play. This year's Southern Championships are hosted by Brown and run April 13-14. The Bison-Tigers rematch is slated for 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13.
