Bucknell Women's Water Polo Loses to No. 12 Princeton and George Washington at Southern Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –The Bucknell women's water polo team opened the Southern Championships Saturday and lost a pair of games. The Bison opened the day with a 13-4 loss to No. 12 Princeton and then dropped an 8-7 decision to George Washington. Bucknell (5-17) will play in the fifth-place game Sunday at 9 a.m. against an opponent that will be determined Saturday evening.
The Southern Championships features two three-team brackets which played a round-robin schedule on Saturday. Top-seeded Princeton and fourth-seeded George Washington were in the same bracket as Bucknell, while second-seeded Brown, third-seeded Harvard and sixth-seeded Merychurst were in the other bracket. The Bison will square off on Sunday with the third-place team in the opposite bracket.
The day's opener against Princeton (21-5) marked Bucknell's second consecutive game against the Tigers. Krystle Morgan's two goals led the way for the Bison, who trailed 7-1 at halftime. Eleanor Marrs and Julianne Valdes added one goal apiece.
Bucknell held a 4-3 lead at halftime of the nightcap against the Colonials, but George Washington outscored the Bison 5-3 in the second half for its second one-goal victory over Bucknell this season. Tara Murao, who had two assists earlier in the day, posted two goals and one assist, while Mackenzie Ferry registered one goal and two assists to account for the majority of the Bison points.
Bucknell drew a season high-tying 12 ejections against George Washington (14-12) as Valdes, Murao, Hannah Sunday and Morgan each drew three.
Rena Heim, who came one save shy of equaling her season high, posted 11 stops opposite the Colonials and her 16 saves on the day pushed her over the 200 plateau (205) for the second consecutive season.
