PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Mackenzie Ferry had a team-high three goals and Krystle Morgan totaled two goals, two assists and tied her career high with six ejections drawn as the Bucknell women's water polo team defeated Mercyhurst 9-4 Sunday morning to earn fifth place at the Southern Championships.
The win was the third this season over the Lakers for the Bison. Bucknell (6-17) has now defeated Mercyhurst (13-13) five straight times and is 8-1 against the Lakers all time.
Bucknell and Mercyhurst both held true to seed. The Bison, which lost twice on Saturday, were the No. 5 seed entering the two-day Southern Championships, while the Lakers were the sixth seed. Mercyhurst also lost a pair of games on Saturday.
Morgan, Ferry and Julianne Valdes, who added two goals, one assist and three ejections drawn, paced the Bucknell offense. Morgan, who reached the 100-goal mark for her career on Saturday, now has 29 goals this season, while Valdes reached 30 goals for the campaign. Hannah Sunday, who had two steals and a pair of ejections drawn against Mercyhurst, paces the squad with 32 goals.
Valdes' three points Sunday moved her into sole possession of 11th place on the Bison all-time scoring list. She now has 233 points (134g, 99a) in her three-year career.
Bucknell's 12 ejections drawn equaled a season high. Morgan has twice previously drawn six in a game, including last week at Princeton. She now has a team-high 55 ejections drawn this season and 140 in her career. She ranks fifth on the program's all-time list.
Junior goalie Rena Heim had a solid day in cage for the Bison as she equaled her season high with 12 saves and limited the Lakers to four goals, matching the fewest scored against Bucknell this season (Villanova, Occidental).
Top-seeded Princeton and second-seeded Brown will square off for the Southern Championships title Sunday afternoon. The Bison last won a Southern Championships crown in 2010.
Both Bucknell and Mercyhurst will move on to the Eastern Championship, which will take place April 26-28 at Michigan. The seeding assignments for the 12-team field will be finalized early this week.
