Bucknell Men's Tennis Bests Colgate, 5-2, on the Road

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Bucknell men's tennis made quick work of Colgate, winning 5-2 in Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon. The Bison swept doubles play and won each of the first three singles matches to secure their first Patriot League win of the season, improving to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. It was Bucknell's sixth consecutive victory over Colgate.
Bucknell won all three doubles bouts, although Colgate did its best to keep it close. Octavio Canibe and Kelly Morque ended up with the most lopsided victory, defeating Bobby Berkowitz and Alan Pleat 8-3 at the third position. Aidan Lynch and Evan Zimmer extended their winning streak together to three matches, winning 8-6 over Alec Goldstein and Nick Laub. The sweep was completed thanks to the Nick Bybel and Josh Katten, who bested Luke Gensburg and Harry Jewett by a score of 9-7.
Katten collected his second win of the day right off the bat in a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Laub. The Bison senior now has a career combined record of 148-91. He remains in second on the Bucknell wins list and draws within two victories of tying Ryan Sandburg for the all-time record.
Morque and Zimmer followed their classmate with wins of their own to secure the team decision. Morque was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Goldstein, while Zimmer knocked out Berkowitz 7-5, 6-3. It was Zimmer's third consecutive win over Berkowtiz. The Bison senior defeated his Colgate foe during both the regular season and in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals last season.
Rounding out the scoring for Bucknell was Canibe with a straight-sets decision over John Beam, 6-3, 6-1. The only two matches to go the way of the Raiders were Nos. 1 and 5 singles. Neither of those went smoothly, however, as Colgate needed three sets in both bouts. Gensburg pulled out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 decision over Bybel at the top of the lineup. Pleat defeated Kyle Rosen 6-7, 6-4, (10-6).
Bucknell will be back in action tomorrow with an 11 a.m. matchup with Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y.
