LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), a member of the Bucknell softball team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, April 30.
MacLean won the Lee S. "Bud" Ranck Memorial Award, presented "for outstanding spirit and contribution to the Bucknell athletic program." MacLean shared the award with Matt Napleton of the men's water polo team, who was the male selection.
MacLean has been a major contributor to Bucknell softball and the community throughout her career. On the softball field, she will graduate as one of the all-time leaders in strikeouts, ranking fourth with 303 punchouts and at least one more weekend of play remaining. She also ranks among the single-season top 10 in nine categories and holds six top-10 rankings on the Bucknell career lists.
MacLean's list of accolades began during a stellar freshman campaign. In 2010, the native of Northampton, Pa., was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Patriot League. She capped off that season being voted the Patriot League Tournament MVP as well.
Away from the field, MacLean has done extensive work with children who are less fortunate. She began her efforts as an intern with the Angel 34 Foundation, which supports children suffering from cancer and their families. Her efforts later included fundraisers and other initiatives involving the campus community to benefit the foundation. MacLean, who will graduate with a degree in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on linguistics and education, has worked with children with autism, served as sign language tutor and completed an internship at Boston Children's Hospital doing audiology and speech testing. MacLean has also served two terms as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president.
