LEWISBURG, Pa. - Carter Bumgardner had a pair of RBI doubles for Bucknell, but Collin Forgey was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Saint Joseph's, which defeated the Bison 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at a cold and windy Depew Field. The bullpens combined to pitch 9.1 innings and gave up just four hits and one run as four of the game's six runs were scored in the first three innings.
Bucknell's (6-21) offense produced seven hits, but only Bumgardner's doubles in the first and fifth innings led to runs. The Bison did have plenty of chances to score as they had at least one runner in scoring position in five innings and left eight runners on base.
Saint Joseph's (13-15) registered 10 hits against five Bucknell pitchers. The Hawks left 12 men on base, including six in the first three innings of play.
Jack McLinden (0-1) got the start for the Bison and yielded seven hits and three runs in his four innings of work. The junior got the first two outs in the first rather easily, but then gave up a single to Mike Muha, an RBI double to Brian O'Keefe and an RBI single to Chris Hueth as the Hawks took the early 2-0 lead.
Bucknell scored a run of its own in the bottom of the first when Furman extended his hitting streak to six games with a leadoff single. He came around to score on Bumgardner's first double.
Saint Joseph's extended its lead to 3-1 in the third when Hueth led off with a single and then scored on Forgey's double to left.
Bumgardner's second RBI double made it 3-2 in the fifth and the score remained that way until the Hawks plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
The bullpens proved to be impressive on both sides. Xavier Hammond entered the game in place of McLinden in the fifth and retired six of the seven hitters he faced. Austin Zimmerman, Marcus Garone and Max Kra followed with an inning apiece for the Bison. Zimmerman gave up a single and a walk, but got out of a first-and-second jam with a two-out grounder to third by Anthony Cirillo, who entered the game hitting .382, but was 0-for-4 on the day. Garone pitched a perfect eighth, while Kra retired two of the first three hitters he faced in the ninth.
The Saint Joseph's bullpen had plenty of success as well. Steven Schuler (1-1) relieved starter James Harrity, who struck out six in his 4.2 innings, and did not allow a hit in 2.1 innings. Daniel Thorpe and Jimmy Yacabonis pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, and allowed only a single to center by Robb Scott in the bottom of the eighth. Yacabonis pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the year.
Furman was not the only Bison to extend his hitting streak to six games as Rob Krentzman had a leadoff single in the third to match Furman's current team-best streak.
Bumgardner was 2-for-3 in the contest, but missed a final at bat as he was lifted for pinch runner Will Mooney in the fifth.
Bucknell will return to Patriot League play this weekend with a four-game series at Navy.
