WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bucknell women's tennis advanced to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals with a 4-0 win over Holy Cross at West Point, N.Y., on Friday afternoon. Clinching the quarterfinal bout with the Crusaders was Maria Cioffi with her straight-sets win at No. 2 singles. The third-seeded Bison (10-11) have now won each of their last eight quarterfinal bouts and will earn the right to face No. 2 Navy tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Cioffi was one of three Bison to collect to wins against sixth-seeded Holy Cross (3-8). Cioffi started off her day with an 8-1 win at first doubles. Partnering with Elena Vidrascu, the Bison defeated Taylor Stathis and Jaclyn Carroll. Lydia Colvin and Stephanie Pino then secured the doubles point with an 8-3 decision over Maya Welch and Abigail Henry at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Colvin and Pino were also winners in singles. Pino was the first off the court, defeating Cassy Deng 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. Pino now has a record of 19-11 on the year. One more victory will make her the second Bison to 20 victories this season, joining Cioffi who, with her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Carroll, is now 24-12.
Colvin followed Pino off the courts after knocking off Welch, 6-0, 6-3 at third singles. It was the sophomore's second consecutive victory since righting herself after a five-match winless skid at the end of the regular season.
Bucknell led Holy Cross in the four matches that went unfinished before the Bison clinched the team decision. Jen Bush and Elizabeth Morgan were up 6-4 at third doubles. Bush was also leading her singles opponent 6-2, 4-3 when play was halted. Vidrascu was up 6-3, 3-0 at first singles and Christie Schneider led Addie Devine 6-2, 4-3.
The Bison will now turn their attention to Navy, which defeated Lafayette 4-0 in an earlier quarterfinal match. Bucknell fell 7-0 to the Midshipmen during the regular season. Cioffi and Vidrascu were the only Bison to secure a win, defeating Noelle Kaufmann and Erin Snook at No. 1 doubles on March 23.
