LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior men's swimmer Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) was announced as an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner this week. The honor is the latest recognizing Treat's strong athletic and academic abilities. Last month, he earned his third consecutive Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
To qualify for the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.
Created in 1964, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships promote and encourage education by rewarding the NCAA's most accomplished student-athletes.
One of just 14 Patriot League student-athletes to be named their sport's Scholar-Athlete of the Year three straight years, Treat was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team for a third consecutive season this past winter.
A four-time All-Patriot League selection, including a First Team choice each of the last two years, Treat posted three individual top-five showings at last February's Patriot League Championships. He finished fourth in the 200 IM (1:49.52) and 100 breast (55.67) and fifth in the 200 breast (2:00.46) and was the second-highest non-Navy point-scorer behind teammate Mike Nicholson. Treat broke the school record in the 100 breast (55.02) during the prelims of that event.
Treat finished his Patriot League career having scored in 12 individual events. He will graduate ranked on Bucknell's top-10 lists in four individual events (100 breast (1st), 200 breast (2nd), 200 IM (2nd), 200 free (9th)) and 22 relays.
Away from the pool Treat is an animal behavior major with a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average who has been on the Dean's List six times. The scholarship and social chair of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Treat has been president of Bucknell's animal behavior club, a student-athlete leader in the Bison Leadership Academy and a student-athlete speaker at a Prospective Student Forum. He has spent plenty of time volunteering, serving as a swim instructor for the Lewisburg Community Outreach program, helping to clean up a local state park and with the Special Olympics. Treat is also the Bucknell Athletics Senior Gift Drive co-chair and is a teacher's assistant in Bucknell's geography department.
A three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Treat has also participated in Swim Across America to raise money for cancer research and in an AIDS walk/run. He has also served as Key Club president and won the Kiwanis Key Leader Service Award.
