LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Leonard Joseph became the second Bison this weekend to break a school record, setting a new program standard in the hammer throw on the final day of competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic on Sunday. Joseph's throw of 209-11 earned his first place in the event, while Justin Hicks and Ray Holmes also claimed gold medals. At the end of the day, six total program top-10 marks had fallen.
"Overall it was a breakout meet for the outdoor season," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Both teams had many season and personal bests as well as some all-time top-10 performances and ECAC/IC4A performances. Last week I felt we were a week or two behind because of the weather and Spring Break layoff, and now I feel as though we are where we need to be going into the last few weeks of the regular season."
Joseph's throw of 209-11 made him the only competitor in the field to break 200 feet. The distance was also good enough to break the Bucknell record of 209-3 held by James Heizman since 1996. Joseph entered the meet ranked second in program history, just three feet shy of No. 1.
The Bucknell men ended up breaking two school records at the two-day meet at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Luke Webster was the first, setting the new high mark in the discus at 172-1 yesterday. On Sunday, Webster registered another career best, taking fourth in the shot put with a throw of 52-4 ¾. Webster was not among the program's top 10 entering competition, but he leaves with the No. 5 mark.
Stephen Koullias (50-8 ¾) and Quinten Marcott (50-6 ¼) were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the shot put, while Jack Fellows (48-6 ¾) was ninth.
Bucknell finished the meet with three first-place finishes. Joining Joseph was Holmes in the triple jump and Hicks in the 100 meters. Holmes cleared 48-11 ¾ for his second victory of the season. Through three meets this spring, the junior has not placed lower than second.
Hicks won the 100 meters in 10.74 seconds. It was his first race at that distance this year. He was joined in the top 10 at the meet by Patryk Najbar who tied for sixth with a time of 11.00.
Later in the day Hicks took fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.42. Among those to top him was teammate Christian Lupica, who was second in 21.26. Both times are among the best in program history. Lupica moves from No. 9 to No. 2 on the record list, while Hicks improves from seventh to fourth. Lupica is just two-hundredth of a second shy of Kerry Boyle's school record (21.24) from 2007.
Other program top-10 times to fall on Sunday included Alex Jagelsky's 800-meter mark and Grant Reynolds' in the 400-meter hurdles. Jagelsky clocked in at 1:52.16, sneaking his career best time past Bucknell Hall of Famer Dave White to the No. 8 spot, and finished second overall at the meet. Reynolds took sixth in the hurdles with a time of 54.78, which ranks ninth in program annals.
Bucknell posted a handful of finishes in the top five of various other events. Included among them were Ian Ferguson and Scott Weismiller, who tied for fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 14-9, and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The shorter relay took second (41.61), while two Bucknell units placed second and third in the 4x400.
It won't be long before the Bison are back in action on their home turf. The Bucknell Team Challenge is slated for next Saturday, April 20 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in one of the final scored meets leading up to the Patriot League Championships next month.
