Bucknell Women's Tennis Sails Past Lafayette in 6-1 Victory

LEWISBURG, Pa. – After a disappointing showing on Saturday, Bucknell women's tennis bounced back in a big way with a 6-1 win over Lafayette at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Sunday morning. The Bison (7-11, 2-2 PL) have won 14 straight over the Leopards and evened their Patriot League record with only one conference match remaining in the regular season, a mid-week meeting at Lehigh on Tuesday.
Bucknell won two of three doubles matches to take the early lead in the team scoring. Maria Cioffi and Elena Vidrascu stayed above .500 together this spring with an 8-5 win over Caroline Nixon and Catherine Senopoulos at the No. 1 position. The Bison duo is now 7-5 in duals this year, while Cioffi's individual doubles record improves to 21-9 during the 2012-13 campaign.
Also winning were Sam Madnick and Stephanie Pino, who collected their first win as partners. Madnick and Pino defeated Liz Blank and Amanda Kusnierz 8-2.
The Bison kept rolling in singles action, winning five of six matches and doing so in straight sets each time. Cioffi made quick work of Kusnierz, earning a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles. The freshman is now 21-12 overall and 9-9 in duals this year.
Jen Bush, Christie Schneider, Pino and Elizabeth Morgan completed Bucknell's list of winners. Bush played the closest match, but still pulled it out 6-3, 6-4 over Senopoulos. Schneider snapped a seven-match losing streak with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Blank. Filling out the lineup was Pino with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lucy Bass, while Morgan was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Ally Simels.
Bucknell's only loss on the afternoon was a 7-6, 6-3 defeat at No. 1 singles. Nixon beat Vidrascu, which was a turnaround from the players' previous meeting at the Saint Joseph's Invitational in the fall. Vidrascu defeated Nixon 6-3, 6-2 in September.
Bucknell will take on Lehigh in its final Patriot League match of the regular season on Tuesday. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Bethlehem, Pa.
