LEWISBURG, Pa. - Luke Webster broke his own school discus record, highlighting Bucknell men's track and field's start at the Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Bucknell also collected nearly a dozen top-10 finishes on the first day of the two-day meet, which continues tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Webster took over the Bucknell record in the discus in late March, but on Saturday he topped his personal best with a throw of 172-1. That was just over two feet better than his previous record and earned him second place at this year's Outdoor Classic.
The discus was a particularly strong event for the Bison, who placed four throwers in the top 10, including Webster. Just behind the Bison senior were Brian Monahan in fourth, Leonard Joseph in fifth and Brandon Reynolds in seventh. Monahan's top throw of 156-9 was a career best and moves him into a tie for ninth all-time at Bucknell. The sophomore was unranked entering Saturday's meet. Joseph finished the day with a throw of 154-7, while Reynolds wrapped up at 147-4.
Ben Burgess (21-6 ¼) and Dan Gevirtz (21-3 ¼) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, to lead the Bison in the long jump. Jason Brown took sixth in the high jump, clearing 6-2 ¼.
The only events on the track on Saturday were the long distances. John Dugan and Tyler Erhard made the most of the early start, putting up strong performances in the steeplechase. Dugan clocked in at 9:13.34, giving him fifth place, while Erhard was seventh with a time of 9:14.08. Michael McGowan took eighth in the night's final event, the 10,000 meters, finishing in 30:00.32.
