BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -Krystle Morgan posted a pair of multi-goal outings, including a career-high five goals in the nightcap, but it was not enough as the Bucknell women's water polo team opened its 11-game trip to California with a pair of losses Saturday at the Roadrunner Invitational. The Bison opened the day with a 12-9 loss to host CSU Bakersfield and then dropped a 13-11 decision to Cal State Monterey Bay in the evening.
The Bison trailed the Roadrunners 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, but drew to within one at halftime. However, CSU Bakersfield netted the first four goals in the second half. Bucknell (3-6) did close to within 11-9 on a goal by Hannah Sunday with 1:21 to play, but it never drew back to even.
Morgan and Sunday had two goals in the opening game, while Julianne Valdes, Emily Nowlin, Sayeh Bozorghadad, Tara Murao and Barbara Peterson registered one apiece.
Morgan was the offensive standout in the second game as her five goals made her the only Bison to score more than once against Cal State Monterey Bay.
The score was tied 7-7 at halftime as neither team led by more than one goal in the first 16 minutes of play. Cal State Monterey Bay scored the first two goals in the second half and led by as many as three on the way to the two-goal victory. A Mackenzie Ferry goal with 6:05 to play did make the score 11-10, but Cal State Monterey Bay answered just 19 seconds later.
Bison goalie Rena Heim totaled 25 saves on the day with 13 coming in the opener and 12 more in the nightcap. She now has six double-figure save games this season.
Bucknell will continue play at the Roadrunner Invitational Sunday when it faces Pacific at 12:15 p.m. and Wagner at 3:45 p.m. Both times are Eastern.
