LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) made history on Wednesday when he was named the Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third time. He is the first person to win the award three times, and it marks the fourth consecutive year a Bison has been cited.
Additionally, Treat and junior teammate Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep) were voted to the 10-person Academic All-Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Team. It is the third consecutive year Treat has been honored, while it is the first career citation for Reitz.
Last year Treat became just the third person to be named Scholar-Athlete in back-to-back years. Bucknell student-athletes have now won the award nine times in its 23 years in existence. Jay Gross (1992), Scott Woodworth (1997), Alex Johnson (1999), Adam Freeman (2003, 2005) and Daniel Fletcher (2010) are the other Bison to be named PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A four-time All-Patriot League selection, including a First Team choice each of the last two years, Treat posted three individual top-five showings at last month's Patriot League Championships. He finished fourth in the 200 IM (1:49.52) and 100 breast (55.67) and fifth in the 200 breast (2:00.46) and was the second-highest non-Navy point-scorer behind teammate Mike Nicholson. Treat broke the school record in the 100 breast (55.02) during the prelims of that event.
Treat finished his Patriot League career having scored in 12 individual events.
This past weekend, Treat helped the Bison to a sixth-place finish at the ECAC Championships. He posted two top-five finishes and scored in three different events.
Away from the pool Treat is an animal behavior major with a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average who has been on the Dean's List six times. The scholarship and social chair of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Treat has been president of Bucknell's animal behavior club, a student-athlete leader in the Bison Leadership Academy and a student-athlete speaker at a Prospective Student Forum. He has spent plenty of time volunteering, serving as a swim instructor for the Lewisburg Community Outreach program, helping to clean up a local state park and with the Special Olympics. Treat is also the Bucknell Athletics Senior Gift Drive co-chair and is a teacher's assistant in Bucknell's geography department.
A three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Treat has also participated in Swim Across America to raise money for cancer research and in an AIDS walk/run. He has also served as Key Club president and won the Kiwanis Key Leader Service Award.
Reitz started his career off as a two-sport star as a member of both the Bison swimming and diving and water polo teams. He now concentrates on swimming and is coming off a Patriot League Championships where he scored in the 50 free (16th) and 100 free (16th) and finished 18th in the 100 fly. A team co-captain with Treat, Billy Krause and Matthew Stevens, Reitz has now scored in eight career individual events at the league meet.
A two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Reitz was awarded the Richard and Janet Costa Advancement of Science Scholarship and is currently applying for the Order of Omega. He is a biologoy major with a sparkling 3.96 GPA and was recognized by the Collegiate Water Polo Association for having a GPA in excess of 3.7.
Now in its third year, the Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Men's Swimming and Diving Academic All-Patriot League Team consists of 10 student-athletes. Voting for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Academic All-Patriot League Team is conducted by the league's swimming and diving sports information directors, who cannot vote for their own student-athletes.
