LEWISBURG, Pa. --The Bucknell men's lacrosse team suffered just its second loss of the season, and its first at home, on Tuesday against No. 16/17 Penn State. Now the No. 6/7 Bison look to get back on track when Patriot League rival Holy Cross visits Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. The contest will be webcast live on Bison Vision.
Bucknell is 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League. Bucknell, Lehigh and Colgate all sit atop the Patriot League standings at 2-0. Lehigh hosts Navy on Saturday, and Colgate travels to Army on Sunday. Holy Cross is one of the most improved teams in the conference. The Crusaders are 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League, including their first-ever win over Navy on March 17.
Holy Cross will be looking to make similar history against Bucknell, as the Bison have won all 22 previous meetings. Last year's game in Worcester, Mass., came right down to the wire, with Bucknell prevailing 10-9 on Peter Burke's goal with 22 seconds left, followed by a game-saving stop from goalie Kyle Feeney in the final five seconds.
David Dickson led the Bison offense with two goals and two assists, and Todd Heritage and Billy Mattimore scored two each. Holy Cross received three goals from Andrew Morici and four assists from James Kennedy, and the Crusaders finished with a 35-23 shot advantage. Feeney stopped 13 shots for the Bison, who led 6-2 in the first half before Holy Cross mounted a rally.
Dickson handed out two more assists in the Penn State game and now has 31 on the season, third-most in the nation. He leads Bucknell with 36 total points. Freshman middie Thomas Flibotte still leads the team with 25 goals, although he was shut out for the first time all year on Tuesday. Heritage has 23 goals, and Chase Bailey has 19 goals and eight assists.
Holy Cross is coming off an 8-5 mid-week win at Vermont. Last Saturday, the Crusaders fell 8-5 to Lehigh at home. Holy Cross also has wins over Navy (7-5), Rutgers (9-8), Sacred Heart (11-9) and Hartford (11-9).
Clay Haarmann leads the Crusaders with 23 points on 19 goals and four assists. Kennedy is the top assist man with 10, to go along with 11 goals. Other double-digit scorers include John Hannan (14-1-15), Terry McKenna (11-3-14) and Myles Gillespie (10-4-14).
The Crusaders have used three different starting goalies this season. Kenny O'Connor and Michael Ortlieb have started four games apiece. Chris Cousin made his debut on Tuesday at Vermont and finished with 13 saves and only five goals against.
Bucknell has no more mid-week games remaining and is down to just four games left in the regular season, all of them in Patriot League play. After hosting Holy Cross on Saturday, the Bison will have a week off before visiting Army on Apr. 6 at noon.
