Bison Women's Tennis Handed 4-3 Loss from Villanova

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis nearly pulled off a major comeback but fell just short against Villanova in a 4-3 loss at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon. It was the second consecutive 4-3 loss to the Wildcats (5-7), dropping the Bison's record to 5-8 on the year.
Elena Vidrascu captured the first point of the day for Bucknell with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mikelle Mancini at No. 1 singles. The Bison junior is now 4-0 against Wildcats this season having beaten three during tournament play in the fall. It was also the second in straight sets over Mancini after a 6-3, 6-2 win in September's Bucknell Invitational.
Also grabbing wins for Bucknell were Stephanie Pino and Sam Madnick in fifth and sixth singles, respectively. By the time the two Bison could capture their victories, however, the match had already been decided from a team standpoint. Madnick went the distance against Anne Cognetti 6-4, 5-7, (11-9). Pino hung around after dropping the first set to Kate Pettee. Pettee and Pino were even at 3-3 in the second when the Villanova player retired.
Like Madnick, Maria Cioffi also battled in her No. 2 singles bout. Unlike her classmate, however, Cioffi was not so lucky in the end. The freshman fell in two tie breaks to Tori Smyth.
Bucknell's next time out on the court will be on April 2 at Saint Joseph's. The match in Philadelphia is set for 3 p.m. The Bison will then host Towson (April 4) and travel to Colgate (April 6) later in the week.
