Zimmer Wins Two to Lead Bucknell Men's Tennis Past Mount St. Mary's, 5-2

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Evan Zimmer put up some clutch performances securing both the doubles point and the deciding team point in singles as Bucknell men's tennis defeated Mount St. Mary's 5-2 at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Wednesday. The Bison are now 8-5 on the year and will play for victory No. 9 tomorrow against Villanova at 2 p.m.
Zimmer capped off his day with a straight-sets win over Mike Salomon at third singles. The senior won 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the all-important fourth point and team victory for Bucknell. Zimmer is now tied for fourth all-time at Bucknell in singles wins with a 62-39 record, equaling the number of victories put up by former teammate Mark Malloy.
The single win was Zimmer's second of the day as he also guaranteed the Bison the initial point in doubles. Teaming with Aidan Lynch for the first time, Zimmer helped defeat Salomon and Adam Salam by a score of 8-3. That broke a tie after Bucknell had won first doubles thanks to Nick Bybel and Josh Katten and Mount St. Mary's (8-6) had won at the No. 3 slot.
Quick wins from Octavio Canibe and Bybel in singles gave Bucknell the 3-1 edge, leaving the door open for Zimmer to play hero. Canibe defeated Taylor Place 6-4, 6-1 at the bottom of the lineup while Bybel was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Matthew Blake at the top. Bybel, who has won his last three singles bouts, and Zimmer share the team lead in singles wins this season with 16 apiece.
Also winning was Kelly Morque, battling to the end despite his point not being needed. After dropping the opening set to Salam, 7-5, the Bison senior rallied for a 6-0, 6-2 scores in the end.
Bucknell will play again tomorrow, but the match will be a little earlier than anticipated. In an effort to beat the coldest temperatures of the day, the Bison will now host Villanova at 2 p.m.
