Bucknell Men's Tennis Falls in 5-2 Decision at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Bucknell men's tennis went toe-to-toe with Navy in more than one match, but it was the Midshipmen that came away with the victory, 5-2 at Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday morning. Freshman Nick Bybel collected two wins at the top of the lineup for the Bison (7-5, 0-1 PL) in his first career Patriot League match.
Bybel partnered with Josh Katten at No. 1 doubles to earn his first win. The Bison duo topped Calvin Mark and Peter McDonald by a score of 8-6. Bybel later topped Mark for a second time, winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1 singles. The rookie is now 15-6 on the year, tying him for the team lead in singles wins.
Although the Bison fell short of the doubles point, all three matches were played extremely close. Octavio Canibe and Aidan Lynch clinched the win against George Mason yesterday, but that magic ran short against the Midshipmen in an 8-5 loss to Alex Gaines and Alex Sisk. Kelly Morque and Evan Zimmer were the last to walk off the court, battling in a 9-7 loss to Blake Daniel and Nicholas Gutsche at second doubles.
Kyle Rosen rolled past Sisk in singles, 6-2, 6-3, to account for Bucknell's only other victory. The win by Rosen gave the Bison their first team point.
By the time Bybel won, Navy was one point shy of securing the win. That deciding fourth point came at No. 2 singles where the Mids' Peter McDonald defeated Morque in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0. Zimmer was also pushed to three sets before retiring at third singles. The senior won the opening fame 7-5, but fell behind 6-3, 5-3 before calling it a day.
Bucknell is now 0-37 all-time against Navy.
The Bison will host Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m. on March 27 at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The match was rescheduled to this coming Wednesday after being postponed due to snow last week.
